Irresistible Grace
We have reached the I in TULIP.  Irresistible grace is the doctrine that God always saves those whom He chooses to save.  Never does He attempt to save someone and fail.  It is also referred to as effectual calling or efficacious grace.  His saving grace is irresistible and always effective.  This goes back to the fact that God is sovereign over all His creation and nothing and no one can thwart His plans.  To say  that man can resist God in the area of salvation (to the point that a person God has set out to save can resist to the point of never coming to Christ) is to say that God is not sovereign over salvation.  If God is not sovereign over salvation, then He is not sovereign at all.  If He is not sovereign, He is not God.
Verses that teach this doctrine include:
  • Acts 13:48 - All who were appointed (or chosen) for salvation believed.
  • Romans 8:30 - All who are predestined are justified.
  • Acts 16:14 - God opens the heart of Lydia and she is saved.

Primarily, the doctrine of irresistible grace is, again, an inevitable result of God's sovereignty.  God is able to and right to do whatever He wishes with His creation and there is nothing that anyone can do to foil His plans and purposes.  Daniel 4:35 says "All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth.  No one can hold back his hand or say to him: “What have you done?".  Psalm 115:3 states "Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him."  God is in complete control of everything in His universe including the salvation of men.  I am aware of the objections to this doctrine and will try to speak to some of that at the conclusion of these posts.  Also be aware that these are in no way an exhaustive study of these doctrines.  I strongly encourage you to study them yourselves in the scriptures and with much prayer before coming to any conclusion regarding them one way or the other.  These posts, again, are just a brief explanation of what I believe and some of why I believe them.

I am a follower of Jesus, a husband, and a father. I teach 5th grade in my hometown of Rome, Georgia.
